The International Women’s Day 2018 Is Here On March 8 – How Far Have We Come In Gender Equality?

The International Women's Day 2018 Is Here On March 8 - Make A Living From Home

What do you think when hearing about the upcoming event on March 8 – the International Women’s Day 2018? Do you think: YEAAHH Hallelujah! Finally equal rights and equal wages – among many things – for men and women are highlighted and celebrated! Or do you feel: I could care less, I am tired of all the feminist nonsense!?

I used to belong to the latter. I could care less about feminism and equal rights between women and men because I had everything going for me. I was making more money that many men at my job at the time.

It was not until 5 years later, I actually experienced discrimination, and was awakened to this common Worldwide problem.

It was bad! I honestly do not believe it would have happened if I was a man.

With that being said and without going into further detail (you can read about my story in About This Boss), I feel that I want to honor this day, and the achievements this gathering – that started a century ago – has done for women’s equality in society.

What Is The International Women’s
Day About?

The International Women's Day 2018 Is Here On March 8 - Make A Living From Home

“International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity”.

International Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century and first emerged from the activities of labor movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America, and across Europe.

The first gathering was supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

You can check out the International Women’s Day’s website here.

What Is The International Women’s Day Theme For 2018?

The main theme for 2018 is: #PressforProgress.

The reason behind choosing this year’s theme is motivated as:

“Now, more than ever, there is a strong call-to-action to press forward and progress gender parity. There is a strong call to #PressforProgress motivating and uniting friends, colleagues, and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive”.

Use this hashtag whenever you think about something that can make a positive difference for women, so we can share knowledge and information, and inspire each other.

2018 International Women’s Day Events

Each year, many events related to this day are held Worldwide. To name a few, there are; global gatherings, conferences, awards, exhibitions, festivals, fun runs, corporate events, concert performances, speaking events, online digital gatherings and more.

#1. Did you know that it was exactly 100 years since women secured the right to vote in the UK?

#2. Did you know that the first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States on 28 February, 1909? The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honor of the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.

#3. Did you know that married women obtained the right to engage in gainful employment without needing their husband’s consent in 1919?

#4. Did you know that therapeutic abortion was legalized in 1950? And in 1961 the usage of contraceptive pill was accepted.

#5. Did you know that over 20 % of women were elected to Parliament for the first time in 1970?

#6. Did you know that the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March, 1975?

#7. Did you know that the Act on Equality between Women and Men was adopted (Equality Act) in 1987?

How Far Have We Come In The Pay Gap Between Women And Men In 2018?

Still in 2018, women generally earn around 80 cents for every dollar men earn, and in a year this comes up to about $10.000 LESS than men. Note, that these figures are broad overviews and compare the pay among all full-time, year-round workers.

When you look at a long-time career, the numbers are quite shocking. In fact, the gap hinders wealth building for women.

Based on the 2015 wage gap, a 20-year-old female entering the work force full time will lose $418,800 over a 40-year career compared to a male worker, according to the NWLC.

In other words, a woman has to stay in the workforce 10 YEARS LONGER THAN A MAN in order to earn the same amount.

Unfortunately, race and ethnicity are also factors that widen the pay gap. The gender pay gap is much larger among African American and Hispanic female workers.

Black women earn 63 cents for every dollar a white, non-Hispanic man earns, meaning they will typically lose more than $840,000 over a 40-year career.

Even that this gap is slowly decreasing, it will take 44 years to totally eliminate the pay gap between men and women in this slow development rate.

Surprisingly, the biggest pay gap is in the legal industry, where women earn 56 cents on every dollar men earn.

This Has To Change! Women Are As Capable As Men And Deserve To
Be Rewarded As Such No Matter Gender, Race, Or Ethnicity!

The fact that this gap is too big and takes too long to close, is the reason I want to honor the International Women’s Day 2018.

Something drastic has to be done for society to understand that women deserve as much as men, and the International Women’s Day is a huge step in the right direction.

To all my fellow women out there, speak up!

Do not be afraid to demand what you rightfully deserve!

We are extremely capable!

Many blessings and love to you!
